🤖 GPT-6 Astra learns to read and write neural network weights directly

MIT CSAIL researchers published the blog post 'Sparks of Weight-Space Programming': LLM GPT-6 Astra reads and writes neural network weights as data, without gradient descent. From weights alone, it identified the game and language of trained networks, and editing 0.016% of Qwen3.5-0.8B weights eliminated looping: MATH-500 increased from 7.9% to 48.1%, GSM8K from 13.8% to 67.1%, and IFEval from 21.0% to 62.3%.

🌍 If the approach scales, model debugging and tuning change: defects like loops are fixed precisely, without full fine-tuning—potentially cheaper and faster than a training run.

👤 This is currently a research result: verifying the edit requires 50 runs, and its impact on other capabilities has not been assessed. However, the eight MIT experiments are already available to read.
