Researchers from the Vesuvius Challenge project have achieved a historic breakthrough by performing a complete digital reading of the charred papyrus scroll PHerc. 1667. By combining phase-contrast X-ray microtomography (ESRF) with advanced machine learning techniques, the team succeeded in virtually unrolling the artifact and identifying Ancient Greek text that was previously considered lost.

The project team successfully applied a Scan -> ML-Unroll -> OCR/NLP pipeline to recover the contents of the PHerc. 1667 scroll. As a result of the digital reconstruction, a 2nd-century BCE Stoic philosophical treatise, attributed to Aristocles, a student of Chrysippus, was deciphered. The success was confirmed by the accurate identification of the author and the philosophical school.

The scrolls from Herculaneum were damaged during the eruption of Mount Vesuvius and turned into fragile, charred lumps of charcoal that cannot be physically unrolled without immediate destruction. Until now, researchers could only partially read individual fragments, but the full reconstruction of an entire document remained an impossible task.
