📜 Vesuvius Challenge achieves first full reading of a charred scroll

Researchers from the Vesuvius Challenge project have completed the first full digital reading of the charred papyrus scroll PHerc. 1667. Using phase-contrast X-ray microtomography (ESRF) and machine learning, the team was able to virtually unroll the scroll and identify the Ancient Greek text.

🌍 This success demonstrates the maturity of computer vision and deep learning methods in solving ultra-complex physical data reconstruction tasks.

👤 This discovery paves the way for the mass reading of hundreds of other sealed scrolls from Herculaneum.
