💼 Microsoft Not Renewing AI Compute Lease with Oracle
Bloomberg, citing sources, reported that Microsoft is not renewing a 2023 agreement to lease servers from Oracle equipped with previous-generation Nvidia chips and has been shutting down this capacity over the past few months. Oracle maintains that demand for its AI infrastructure, including older chips, remains high, but its shares fell by 3-4%.
🌍 The termination is part of Microsoft's review of over $80 billion in lease obligations with 'neoclouds' (CoreWeave, Nscale, Nebius) due to high prices and delays: the AI compute market is transitioning from capacity capture to cost control.
👤 GPU leasing is not a permanent strategy even for giants: hardware depreciates quickly, and a cloud's dependence on one or two clients is risky. However, Microsoft is an extreme case: for standard inference tasks, older chips are often still suitable.
