OpenAI released Images 2.6 in ChatGPT and Codex on November 4: animated GIFs can now be created from text prompts or user images, with options to adjust speed and edit individual frames. The API offers GPT-Image-2.6 Flare (approximately 6 seconds) and Sunburst (quality, consistency during edits, SVG). OpenAI states that generation is 50% faster, with volume exceeding 4 billion images per week, compared to 3 billion in September.

🌍 GIF generation fills the niche of short animations and storyboards, a space OpenAI is re-entering after the closure of Sora, while the two API modes offer a choice between speed and quality.
