💼 Altman: OpenAI robots will build data centers
In John Collison's Cheeky Pint podcast, Altman said that OpenAI's robotics efforts will be directed toward data center construction: AI controls robots that launch chip factories, assemble turbines, and solar panels. He described "self-replicating" data centers as being "within reach."
🌍 OpenAI is closing the entire compute chain: its own chip with high "intelligence per watt," and robotic data center construction. Construction and 5 years of operation for 1 GW currently cost ~$70 billion, with a target of ~$20 billion. Companies with multi-year capacity contracts should factor in the right to price renegotiation.
👤 If the plan works, inference and model training will become cheaper, which will be reflected in API prices. However, Altman did not specify timelines or prices, and key promises currently lack benchmarks and calculation methodologies.
