🛠 Polytoken 0.8.17: Background Daemon Agent for Coding on Your Machine
The “local-first” agent runs as a background process (daemon): it independently maintains sessions with various AI providers, executes shell commands, file edits, and searches directly in your environment, and is managed via CLI and TUI. The author's distribution, Ed, is a Go toolset, free (“free as in beer”), and not dependent on a single vendor. The 0.8.17 release from 29.09.2026 added the GPT-6.1 Sol model for OpenAI and Codex providers, modeless session continuations (polytoken continue --no-attach), a session repair command (sessions repair), and smarter failover for model groups. Two days earlier, version 0.8.16 brought Claude Sonnet 5.5 and native language-server support for TypeScript 7 projects; since September 14, six releases have been published (0.8.9–0.8.17).
🌍 Agentic development is shifting from monolithic CLI assistants to daemon harnesses — a local layer that independently maintains sessions, mixes models from different vendors (for example, GLM-5.2 as an orchestrator and GPT 5.6/DeepSeek-V4-Flash as executors), and survives provider outages through model groups with ordered failover and rate-limit accounting. All prompts are open for editing, and tools are not revoked by a vendor's decision — a direct response to vendor lock-in risks. The appearance of a model in a provider's catalog does not yet mean a measurable quality increase: there are no benchmarks for agentic sessions in the sources.
👤 You can try it with a single command: curl -fsS https://get.polytoken.dev | bash — Linux/macOS, amd64/arm64, without sudo, with SHA-256 verification and a signed update feed (polytoken update). Practical features from recent releases: repairing “broken” sessions (polytoken sessions repair), background shell tasks with live output in the Jobs viewer, and a limit on parallel subagents via daemon.max_concurrent_subagents. Just keep in mind: the source code, prompts, and file context will be sent to multiple providers (OpenAI, Codex, Mistral, DeepInfra), and their terms regarding data storage and use are not disclosed in the sources — this is a risk to verify, not an established fact.
