For the 2026–2027 school year, NYC Public Schools have banned student-facing generative AI for students from Pre-K through 8th grade — nearly 600,000 children, two-thirds of the largest school system in the US. Companion chatbots are banned in all grades, while teachers are allowed to use AI for lesson planning and administrative tasks.
