Debian has concluded its General Resolution vote on the use of generative AI and LLMs in contributions: Mark Haber's compromise option, "Responsible Use of Generative AI," won, while a full ban did not reach the required 3:1 supermajority.

💻 Debian chose a compromise on AI in contributions

The General Resolution vote ran from August 15 to 28, 2026: 1,039 active developers chose from eight options. Under the Condorcet method, the compromise "Responsible Use of Generative AI" won — 203 to 148 for the second-place "Allow AI-Assisted Contributions." A full ban did not reach the required 3:1: 144 to 257.

🌍 Debian is the base system for thousands of distributions and critical open-source infrastructure, a benchmark alongside Fedora, Gentoo, GCC, and the Linux kernel. The resolution deliberately does not resolve the copyright question for LLM output.

👤 Debian neither endorses nor bans AI; quality standards remain the same: the author must understand and verify AI code and is responsible for the result. Disclosing AI use is recommended but not required, and sending secrets to third-party AI services is prohibited.
