AWS has introduced a new capability within AWS WAF Bot Control, allowing website owners to directly monetize access for AI bots, such as GPTBot or Claude-Web.
What Happened
When an AI bot is detected, the service can now return an HTTP 402 Payment Required response. Payments are implemented via the x402 protocol using USDC stablecoins on the Base and Solana networks, supported by the Coinbase x402 Facilitator. Technically, the solution operates at the Amazon CloudFront level.
Context
The industry is currently facing the problem of "parasitic" content consumption by AI agents, which scrape data without providing advertising traffic or attracting new subscribers. Current protection methods often boil down to simple blocking, which does not address the economic issue.
