G7 nations have developed a classification system for the degree of openness of AI models. Four levels are now identified: Open Source AI with open data, Open Source AI with limited data, Open Weights AI, and Weights Available AI. This will allow for a clear distinction between full Open Source and models with limited access.
🌍 Creating a unified conceptual framework reduces the risk of regulatory uncertainty and allows for the separation of fully open projects from "open weights" models, which may have commercial or geographical restrictions.
👤 It will become easier for users to distinguish truly free software from models that provide access to parameters but impose strict conditions on their use.
