đź› Free Figma MCP Without Limits
Figma's official MCP server on the free Starter plan is limited to 20 calls per month—only tools that read data from Figma are counted, while write tools are not. Full access to 200 calls per day and 10 per minute is available only on paid Full/Dev seats, as confirmed by Figma's official documentation. The open-source project figma-console-mcp by southleft provides a workaround: its MCP server connects to a Desktop Bridge plugin within the Figma desktop application and operates via the Plugin API, which is not subject to the official server's limits. The project is under the MIT license, available as the npm package figma-console-mcp, and has been in development since October 2025. The current version v1.46.0, released on October 29, 2026, claims 130 tools in local mode (105 via cloud mode for web clients like Claude.ai): creating and editing frames, components, and layers; working with design tokens and syncing them with code in DTCG/CSS/Tailwind formats; FigJam boards and Figma Slides; screenshots; real-time tracking of edits and logs; and WCAG accessibility audits. Unlike the official MCP, this project does not include Code Connect—the link between design components and code.
🌍 Figma has effectively monetized AI access to design data through MCP server limits: the generous 200 calls per day are tied to paid Full/Dev seats, while the free Starter plan receives only 20 read calls per month. figma-console-mcp demonstrates that the same access can be implemented locally via the Plugin API without the official server, putting pressure on the monetization model for AI integration with design ecosystems: a paid upgrade for limits is no longer the only path.
👤 If the monthly limit of the official Figma MCP is exhausted, an agent can be connected to Figma for free: figma-console-mcp installs the Desktop Bridge plugin, which you enable in the Plugins → Development → Figma Desktop Bridge menu, after which 130 tools become available—editing layouts and tokens, screenshots, edit monitoring, FigJam, and Slides on macOS and Windows. Caveats: the tool count is a self-description by the project, not an independent verification; Code Connect is absent; and the permissibility of bypassing limits under platform rules is not confirmed by sources.
