🛡 FairStress: A Test for LLM Fairness

On October 20, 2026, Ai2 released FairStress: 300 scenarios involving choices between two candidates across 29 domains and up to 78 adversarial prefixes—over 13 million variations. Across 15 models including OLMo, Llama, Qwen, Gemma, Claude, and GPT, "anti-stereotypical overcorrection" was identified: when a group is explicitly mentioned, models are 9.3 percentage points more likely to reject a stronger candidate in favor of a minority.

🌍 Alignment teaches models to block discriminatory requests rather than weigh skills; the "symmetric fairness" metric serves as an audit criterion for LLMs in hiring, lending, and healthcare, where asymmetry carries legal and reputational risks.

👤 The dataset (CC-BY-4.0), code, and report are open: FairStress-Core (~50k examples) can be run via Olmo-eval—test your model to see the numbers of asymmetry, not abstract claims.
