Google Research published a prospective study in JAMA Network Open: AI determines gestational age from 'blind' ultrasound — an untrained operator moves the Clarius C3 probe over the abdomen, and the model calculates the due date. In 385 participants in Chicago and Nairobi, the AI error was 4.18 days compared to 4.48 days for experts.

🌍 The model was trained on 1,968 participants in the US and Zambia, minimally fine-tuned on 120 cases for the Clarius C3 — and it worked in Nairobi without local adaptation. The 'blind' protocol with AI scales to inexpensive probes and minimally trained operators.

👤 The method provides expert-level accuracy for nurses and paramedics without years of training. According to WHO data, more than 250,000 maternal deaths per year are linked to the unavailability of diagnostics.
