🔋 Solid-State Batteries: An Engineering Breakthrough, Market in the 2030s

MIT Technology Review’s “The Impossible Issue” examines solid-state batteries: replacing liquid electrolytes with ceramics or polymers. This promises fast charging, longer lifespan, and reduced fire risk. Lithium dendrites and ceramic cracking remain obstacles.

🌍 QuantumScape has reduced the heat treatment of ceramic electrolytes from days to minutes, Toyota is building a pilot plant for an electric vehicle with a 1,200 km range after a 10-minute charge, and CATL invested approximately $2.6 billion in 2024. Price parity with lithium-ion batteries is expected by the mid-2030s.

👤 Mercedes-Benz drove an EQS with solid-state batteries for 1,200 km without stopping, but for the next few years, the technology will be available to the premium segment, aviation, and defense; mass-market affordable versions will not appear before the mid-2030s.
