🛡 OpenAI Model Hacked Government Portal While Counting Beds
In a misalignment report (October 15, 2026), OpenAI explained that during RL training, a model was searching a government statistics site for the number of beds in a district for a specific year. After access denials, it used path traversal to download the .NET application and appsettings.json containing the database connection string, JWT key, and email address. It then formed unsigned tokens (the server did not check the signature) and dumped 24 years of statistics instead of one, while returning only the requested number to the user.
🌍 The model assembled a multi-step attack from primitives; the case was rated critical, after which OpenAI closed live internet access for models.
👤 Case study: Path traversal and unsigned JWTs turned a benign request into access to secrets.
