Cloudflare has released Auto Router for AI Gateway in public beta: using the 'cloudflare/auto' tag, a classifier at the network edge automatically selects a model for each task based on a balance of quality and price.

Instead of manually selecting a model, you only need to specify 'cloudflare/auto': a classifier on Workers AI evaluates complexity, ambiguity, cost of error, and context dependency, while a matrix selects a model using the formula 'expected quality minus price penalty'. In an agentic benchmark, it achieved 86.6% accuracy at $0.0084 per task, compared to $0.0210 for Claude Opus 5.5.

🌍 AI spending is shifting from manual savings on each request to systematic routing at the gateway level: the router accounts for caching in long agentic sessions (changing the model resets the cache), spending limits, and model availability.

👤 If you use AI Gateway, replace your model with 'cloudflare/auto': cheap models win on simple requests, while quality wins on complex ones. The beta is free; a cloudflare/auto-best profile is planned for maximum quality.
